Reliability of measurements :
The main consideration is the reliability of your blood pressure monitor's measurements. According to the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) 2021 recommendations, only blood pressure measuring devices that have been clinically validated should be used. Three associations have established internationally recognized protocols: the European Society of Hypertension (ESH), the British Hypertension Society (BHS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). According to the ESH, most blood pressure monitors on the market are not validated according to an established protocol.
The European standard :
Blood pressure monitors are class IIa medical devices under the medical devices regulation, they must carry the associated CE mark to be sold in the European Union. Warning: The CE mark means that the blood pressure monitor meets all safety standards for safe use by the user, but it does not certify the reliability of the device's measurements.
A battery or mains powered blood pressure monitor:
The majority of blood pressure monitors on the market are battery-powered, which means that you always need to have a fresh supply of batteries to ensure proper operation. For ecological, practical and economical reasons, we recommend that you choose an upper arm monitor that can be plugged into a power outlet to be powered without batteries during use, or a wrist monitor with rechargeable batteries.
The features of a good pharmacy blood pressure monitor :
Prefer a model that detects heart rhythm disorders such as:
- arrhythmias
- atrial fibrillation.
So, if your blood pressure monitor accurately indicates the detection of one of these conditions, you can talk to your doctor.
Choose a blood pressure monitor that calculates morning and evening averages automatically. In fact, your doctor will essentially take these averages into account.
